<概要/Course Content Summary>

Natural disasters, when they strike, affect the lives of the many. As the world population increases, more and more people also find themselves living in close proximity to Earth’s hazardous areas.

This course introduces some of the well-known natural disasters that occur in Japan, trying to understand how they occur and what we can do to minimize the harmful impacts of these events.

The class will include the following:

--Every class--
(1) Lecture (Powerpoint slides, audio-visual material will be used).

--Periodically--
(2) Group (3~6 students) and class discussions based on the lecture contents and reading material distributed before and/or during class.

--Twice per semester--
(3) Oral presentation (preparatory work may require group work outside of class)
Please note that the required presentation may be reduced to ONE depending on the number of students in class.

--Assignment before each class--
(4) Reading material and/or audio-visual material

--Mid-term and final evaluations--
(5) Paper based (Questions are mostly true/false questions, multiple choice questions, short essay questions)
