<概要/Course Content Summary> The world faces a variety of identity-based politics that are considered a cause of social divisions today. The phenomenon is nothing new. Ongoing globalization—the process of human movements, networking, and intensifying interconnectivity—has facilitated various interactions, often causing disparities, conflicts, and injustices. At globalization hubs, racially and culturally diversifying populations experienced geographically uneven social transformation. Sometimes, people form “identity” to create “others” as an enemy, and other times, they do so to become “we” to achieve a common goal. This course pays special attention to women’s experiences in the United States, a nation known for the diversity of its population. Hoisting the banner of freedom, democracy, and capitalism, the United States engaged in settler colonialism and imperialism through the nineteenth century to lead in shaping the world order and globalization process. The course examines major historical events in their respective socio-historical contexts. By taking local, national, and transnational perspectives, we explore the complex workings of gender, class, race/ethnicity, ideology, sex, age, etc., in women’s collective power-building and analyze how they affected their identities and society. We discuss similarities and differences among American, Japanese, and/or societies of your interest and ask what lessons we can learn from American examples and how we can use the knowledge to better our communities today. <到達目標/Goals,Aims> Upon completing this course, students acquire knowledge about varieties of “identity politics” and their relationships to the causes and cures of social divides and injustices. They should be able to understand multiple dimensions of collective power-building efforts, the fluidity of “identity,” and the pros and cons of “identity politics” in American experiences. Students cultivate critical thinking and interpretive skills to assess historical issues in respective socio-historical contexts and apply the skills to analyze their own local, national, or international problems to find a solution. They also acquire cross-cultural communication skills through group/class discussions and presentations. <DO Week期間の初回動画等の配信/The delivery of the first video, etc. during the “DO Week”> あり/ Deliver the video ・Identity and Divisions in Society (Identity and Society)<授業計画/Schedule>
