<概要/Course Content Summary>
The connections we form to our own cultural communities — as well as our understandings of other communities — are often shaped by media content and technologies. But in what precise ways are they shaped, and who has power to alter those processes? Many hope that connections fostered by media may help create a more multicultural or just world. Similarly, many fear that these connections are responsible for spreading extremist views and misinformation. This course will examine the complex relationships between media and multiple varieties of communities, including national, local, ethnic, and subcultural groups. Through readings from multiple academic fields, students will discuss media’s potential to change how we understand our own cultures, relate to cultures we see as ‘other’, and complicate the divisions between the two. The first half of the course will be based on discussion of the role of nations and national cultures in the production, transmission, and consumption of media texts. We will then examine the complexities of community in the digital age, focusing on the spread of ideas across national and cultural borders through online participation.
