＜概要/Course Content Summary＞

Thomas Friedman predicted in his famous book “The World is Flat” that the advancement of IT would blur the borders and boundaries on this planet so everyone in the world， wherever they are and whatever they do， would be locked into the global supply chain and therefore the global competition， whether they like it or not. 　
　
His prediction seems accurate in that now everyone is a part of so-called globalized economy. Business processes are being standardized across borders，and people have begun to speak a common language，i.e. English. The world would be a much more homogeneous place if globalization continued at this pace. 　
　
But are we really living in such a monotonous world? Despite the globalization，our life，both professional and private， is full of surprises， discoveries， misunderstandings， and even conflicts， arising from cultural differences worldwide. This is partly because the very globalization has brought in more participants than ever to the world arena， and each participant behaves upon the values of their own home culture. Indeed， there are a variety of cultures in play in this seemingly globalized world. 　
　
This course tries to address the issue of globalization in two aspects: 1) English as a Lingua Franca， and 2) cultural diversity. In the first half of the course， we will examine how the business world is linked by the global common language， i.e. English， from a standpoint slightly different to a traditional one. In the second half， we will learn the world is still a culturally diverse place，and such diversity will hardly die in the coming future. 　
　
This course will be taught in English， so for you to be comfortably engaging in assignments and activities of this class your English proficiency should be equivalent to or higher than CEFR B1， TOEIC 600， TOEFL 550/70， IELTS 5.0， etc. If your proficiency is lower than the above but you still want to take the course， you are advised to consult with the lecturer in advance. Please be advised that class sessions are planned to be delivered face-to-face in classrooms at the time of drafting this syllabus, although the method of delivery may change depending on the situations. 　
　
この授業は英語のみで運営されますが，履修者のほとんどは非母語話者であり（ただし出身国・文化圏は多彩です），かつ日本語の運用能力が必ずしも高くない学生も多いため，真の意味での English as a lingua franca （共通語としての英語）による授業や討論を体験できます。日本の伝統的な授業運営に慣れ親しんだ人には面を食らう場面や課題も多いものの，最後までやり切った学生の満足度がとても高いのがこの授業の特徴です。留学経験者には懐かしい雰囲気がするでしょうし，留学を控えている人，夢見ている人にはちょうど良いリハーサルになるでしょう。グローバル時代を生きる多くの商学部生の履修を望みます。なお，この授業はシラバス執筆時点で教室での対面授業を予定していますが，状況によっては授業実施方法が変わる可能性があります。

By taking this course students will be able to: 　
- Understand theories and frameworks relevant to globalization，　
- Learn what it means to (Business) English as a Lingua Franca， and　
- Enhance cultural awareness that enables cross-cultural collaboration.

The syllabus and lesson plans are subject to change upon the agreement between the students and the lecturer.

＜成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria＞

There will be no final exam at the end of the semester, while there are a series of weekly assignments and video presetation. Although attendance will not be formally assessed, your weekly assignments are expected to refer to and/or reflect in-class discussions and lectures so regular attendance is very important.

There is no single textbook except for English Next by Graddol listed below (downloadable for free). All the reading materials will be provided via e-class.

Classes will be conducted face-to-face in the classroom.　
As stated above, you will need English proficiency equivalent to CEFR B1 or above in all the four skills of reading, listening, writing, and speaking. You should also be able to use a PC inside and outside the classroom sessions. 英語の4技能すべて（reading, listening, writing, and speaking）において CEFR B1 (TOEIC600) 程度以上の運用能力が必要です。また，教室の内外で PC が使用できる状況・環境であることが必須です。
