＜概要/Course Content Summary＞

アメリカの過去から現在までの戦争，特にニュースメディアがそれらの戦争をどう報道してきたかについて考える。マンガ『ADDICTED TO WAR』（戦争中毒）をメインテキストとして使用し，ドキュメンタリー，ウェブサイト動画などを見ながら，批判的な観点からアメリカがどのようにして「軍事超大国」となっていったか，また何故そこから脱け出すことができないかを講義する。　
担当者は日本及び米国の新聞社で，記者，編集者として勤務した経験を有するアメリカ人ジャーナリストで，その経験を活かして，ニュースメディアの報道について講義を行う。　
注：講義のほとんどは英語で進める。（一部，日本語で行う場合もある）提出課題や筆記試験も英語で行うので，英語でコミュニケーションできることが望ましい。　
ニュースメディアに関心のある学部生の受講を歓迎する。履修登録をした学生のみ受講可。　
This course explores past and present wars of the United States, especially the relationship of the news media to those wars. Through the illustrated textbook "Addicted to War" and documentary films, the course takes a critical view of how the U.S. has become a military superpower and why it cannot "kick" its war addiction today.　
The instructor is a Japan-based journalist from the United States, having worked as a newspaper reporter and editor in both countries.　
NOTE: The course will be conducted mostly in English (Japanese may be used occasionally).　
This course is offered mainly for regular undergraduate students of Doshisha who have a strong interest in the news media, and is open only to registered students.

＜到達目標/Goals,Aims＞

履修学生が世界の出来事やメディア関連の事項に対して，批判的な視点，考え方（critical thinking）を持つことができるようになる。また，講義はすべて英語で行うので，自然なコミュニケーション方法としての英語を身につけることができるようになる。　
Students will deepen their critical thinking skills about current world events and media-related issues. Students will also be able to brush up their ESL (English as a Second Language) skills in a natural way during the course.

＜成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria＞

平常点　Class participation / Attendance  50%  毎回の課題の提出および授業の準備，授業に積極的に参加しているかを最重要視。　
Class participation and attendance will be judged based on weekly assignments that students must turn in.  
中間筆記試験　Mid-term exam  10%  前半の講義内容の理解度，意見の独自性及び深く思考できているかを評価する。　
Grade based on student's understanding of first half of course, and expressing own opinions and critical thinking. 
期末筆記試験　Final examination  40%  講義全体の理解度，テキスト内容，ビデオ内容及び講義全体に対して深く思考し，独自の意見を表現できるかを評価する。単位を取るためには必ず期末試験を受けること。　
Grade based on student's understanding of entire course contents, and expressing clearly own opinions and critical thinking. STUDENTS MUST TAKE THE FINAL EXAM IN ORDER TO PASS THE COURSE.

ANDREAS, Joel , ADDICTED TO WAR :  Why the U.S. Can't Kick Militarism .   (AK Press, 2015) ,  生協ブックストアDoshisha Seikyo (Co-op) bookstore .  ISBN:978-1849352178  上記テキストは必ず購入のこと。テキストは2015年度版であることを確認のこと。テキストは全ての講義と試験で必要。　
Students must buy the textbook (2015 edition) for this course. The textbook, which is available for purchase at the Doshisha campus bookstore, will be needed for every lecture and for the exams of this course.

ジョエル・アンドレアス／きくち　ゆみ 監訳  『戦争中毒－アメリカが軍国主義を抜け出せない本当の理由－』(合同出版、2002)日本語版はテキストとして使用する2015年版の英語版に完全には準拠していないが，英語版を理解する上で参考にすることができる。必ずしも購入する必要はない。このクラスの「E-Class」のページでダウンロード可能。
