<概要/Course Content Summary> In this course students will be encouraged to think about the ways in which people from different cultural, ethnic, religious or social backgrounds communicate with one another, as well as the role of culture in influencing an individual’s identity and their notions of what is ‘right and wrong’ or ‘appropriate and inappropriate’ in their interactions with others. The course will cover differing notions of politeness, gender roles and non-verbal communication. Concrete examples of misunderstandings, as well as strategies for overcoming differences and avoiding conflict will also be discussed. <到達目標/Goals,Aims> Students will increase their knowledge and awareness of important issues relating to intercultural communication. <授業計画/Schedule>

<備考/Remarks> In the fall semester 2021, the plan at present is for this class to be conducted in a classroom (face-to-face) using appropriate social distancing measures. If there are students who are not able to attend face-to-face classes due to their own individual circumstances (for example being unable to travel to Kyoto due to the Covid-19 crisis), then it is possible that alternative arrangements can be made for them to complete the course by distance learning. Students in such a situation should contact Professor Aspinall for consultation. |
