<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course will provide students with the basic knowledge and analytic framework necessary to understand the current state of the world economy, while also considering possible future developments. Particular emphasis will be placed on explaining the development of the global economy in the context of technological and social changes.

This course will encourage students to: 
1) Explore various models of economic development as well as the assumptions and economic theories used to fashion those models 
2) Examine how changes in demographics have and will influence world economic growth and the labor market 
3) Investigate the importance of technological innovation in promoting economic development 
4) Evaluate the impact of the exploitation of natural resources in promoting economic growth 
5) Consider the role of money, payment systems and financial markets in the world’s major economies 
6) Assess the potential to eliminate inequalities and deficiencies in the world economic system

Course Requirements and Assignments  
a) Attendance, quizzes and participation:  
You are required to attend the lectures and have an attendance record of at least 80%. You are responsible for watching the assigned videos online and coming to class prepared to discuss these videos. You are expected to actively participate in class discussions. 
b) Weekly quizzes:  
You are responsible for completing all weekly quizzes. 
c) Final Evaluation: 
You are required to attend the final class and participate in the Final Evaluation. 

<成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>

Attendance and participation  20%   
Weekly quizzes  40%   
Presentation  40%  Each student will prepare a presentation and lead the discussion for one of the weekly topics 

CLASSROOM POLICIES  
1. Since discussion is an essential part of this course please come to class prepared and on time. Do not enter the classroom if you are more than 15 minutes late. 
2. Let me know if you have an emergency and will not be able to come to class. 
3. Please turn off your mobile phones. It is inappropriate to go outside to make calls or to send or read text messages during class. 
4. Absolutely NO sleeping in class.  
5. Doshisha University does not tolerate plagiarism, cheating, or helping others to cheat. These actions will result in an automatic “F” in the course. Plagiarism is defined as misrepresenting the work of others as your own.
