<概要/Course Content Summary>
This course examines Japan's cultural encounters with the world, focusing particularly on the late Tokugawa period through early Showa Japan (roughly 1800 to 1930). Though politicians, warriors and diplomats play a part, this course puts culture at the center, examining Japan's encounter with global fashion, food, architecture, shopping, and the visual arts. It pays equal attention to the experiences of women and men, and while focused on Japanese ideas, people and experiences, we also study how Western Europeans and Americans encountered Japan.
<到達目標/Goals,Aims>
This course has three main goals. First, students learn basic factual information about Japan's global encounters in the period between 1800 and 1930. Second, students practice using cultural materials to analyze larger social ideologies. Third, students will develop tools to think critically about transnational cultural contact. In addition, and equally important, students will have fun encountering a wide range of people from the past whose experiences will surprise, amuse and illuminate.
