<概要/Course Content Summary>
The aim of this course is to present and discuss some of the media related issues, with the focus placed on evolution and convergence of media, and relation between media, history and culture. In the class, we will analyse various media, starting from printed matter and move forward to cover recent issues such as social networking, mobile communication and virtual reality. The class will be conducted in an interactive way, so that students will have a chance to explore the concepts related to media, make themselves familiar with the terminology, and will also be encouraged to give their opinion on a range of topics. Students will perform individual research on the topics of their interest and make presentations in class.

The goal of this class is to introduce students to the concept of mass media. It will include the various broadcasting methods, journalism and advertising. The course will touch several mass media theories. It will follow the history of broadcasting, from written word to radio and television, to the internet, games and VR. Students will learn how mass media influences its consumers and analyse its effects on culture and society. By the end of this course, students will have a greater understanding of various media development, and how the media have shaped and influenced our perceptions of reality. While exploring the themes, students will be encouraged to give their opinion on the discussed topics. Students will be expected to perform individual research on certain topics. The participation in the class activities will help students to develop research skills and communication skills by expressing their opinion during the class discussions and presentations, and by listening to other students’ opinions.

Course Requirements and Assignments a) Attendance: You are required to attend all the seminar classes. Failure to attend all classes will lower your final grade. You are required to have an attendance record of at least 80%. Attending less than 80% of the classes will result in an F grade. b) Participation: As there is no final test, the final grade depends heavily on class participation, assignments and presentations. Students are required to participate in in-class discussions, including asking and answering questions and making comments. c) Readings: This course includes extensive reading. You are responsible for completing the readings for the day the readings are assigned and come to class prepared to discuss them. You are required to answer one to three questions based on the assigned reading and submit your paper with answers at the beginning of the class. d) Presentation: Depending on the number of students, you will do one or more individual or group presentations during the semester. You will make a short presentation based on the assigned reading, and at the end of the semester, based on your individual research and material discussed in the class, you will prepare a PowerPoint presentation, a handout with an outline or a summary of your presentation and make copies for all students. After the presentation, students will take part in further in-class discussion, comments and exchange of ideas. e) Final Report: At the end of the course you are required to write a report based on your presentation at the end of the term. Additional Information: CLASSROOM POLICIES 1. Since discussion is an essential part of this course please read the assigned readings and come to class prepared. Take part in class discussions. Your opinion is a valuable contribution to your colleagues and to your grade. Please come on time. 2. Let me know if you have an emergency and will not be able to come to class. 3. Limited use of cell phones is allowed, but only to look up content relevant to the lecture. No chatting/browsing/gaming during the class. It is inappropriate to go outside to make calls during class. 4. No sleeping in class. Sleeping during class results in a lower grade. 5. No plagiarism or cheating.

Announcements, distribution of materials are also scheduled to be done via Teams. After the end of the class, the powerpoint slides used during the class will be uploaded to Teams, together with the reading for the next week and a link to the video recording from the class. Submission of assignments are scheduled to be done via Turnitin. Students should turn on the camera function of the device when attending class, however, if the class is large, the camera should be used only when a person is speaking. Questions will be received and answered via Teams or email. Note to students: The ILA will be offering all courses through remote learning over the spring and fall semesters of the 2021 Academic Year.
