<概要/Course Content Summary>

The institutions and practices of global governanceg developed over a lengthy period and today incorporate a range of state, non-state and suprastate entities. International organisations are an integral part of the global governance system, but they make up one element of a wider tapestry of global governance institutions, regimes and rules. This course aims at offering an understanding of the evolution and contemporary nature of the global governance system and the norms, institutions and actors that shape this system. The United Nations is assessed as centrepiece of the current global governance system, while the UN’s relationship with other international (intergovernmental and non-governmental) organisations, and with states, transnational business corporations and civil society is also explored. Drawing on practical examples, the course looks at major global governance topics, specifically international security, the international human rights regime, and the UN and the Global Commons.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

Through the use of practical examples, the course aims to illustrate the purpose and practices of global governance today, with a central focus on the United Nations. Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge of the workings of the global governance system and, through the use of case studies, be able to form well-reasoned assessments of the successes and shortcomings of global governance institutions, with a view to offering appropriate recommendations.
