<概要/Course Content Summary>
This course focuses on the relationship between globalization and education, examining the ways in which globalization has shaped education as well the ways in which education has impacted globalization. Although recognizing that the concept of globalization is rooted in economics, this course approaches globalization in a more general sense of being the removal of barriers that hinder not only the worldwide flow of capital and material goods, but also the worldwide movement of ideas across categories of geopolitical space, class, gender, and race. “Education and World Culture” is a two-semester course with the first semester being a prerequisite for taking the second. Both semesters require active participation with English-language reading, writing and discussion assignments. The first semester begins with an introduction to globalization and the various theories that have attempted to describe the mechanisms and implications of the process. The course then examines the historical connection between globalization and education, looking in particular at the way in which global trends have shaped local educational thought and practices. Building on the first semester, the second semester focuses on the key characteristics of the globalization of education in the world today. Emphasis is placed on how education has either responded or failed to respond to global crises. COURSE LANGUAGE This is an English-language course. Lectures will be delivered in English, all reading materials will be in English, and all writing assignments must be completed in English.
