＜概要/Course Content Summary＞

In any modern nation, the education system is a vital function of the state. Criticizing, reforming and improving this system is always a political process. In pluralistic, democratic states like Japan and England, education is inevitably an arena for intense debate about how resources are distributed, how the content of the curriculum is decided, how schools are managed and what the aims and goals of each section of the system should be. 　
　
In this course, students will analyze the education systems of England and Japan with a focus on these political aspects. Topics for class discussion include the historical development of national education systems and the relationship between education and social class. We will also explore controversies about gender, children's rights, the teaching of history and the influence of teachers' unions, political parties and other stakeholders.　

＜到達目標/Goals,Aims＞

Students will increase their knowledge and improve their awareness of the political aspects of education in England and Japan. In so doing, students will develop their research skills and their ability to express their ideas in written and verbal forms.

＜成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria＞

平常点(出席，クラス参加，グループ作業の成果等)	20%	Students are expected to read the relevant handout before each class and engage in discussions based on those texts.
期末レポート試験・論文	50%	Students must write a final report on a topic related to the politics of education. In the report the student must show their ability to gather data, interpret and analyse that data and present their conclusions in an articulate fashion
クラスで発表など	30%	Students must make an oral presentation in class on a topic related to the politics of education. They must show their ability to present the findings of their research to the other students in a clear and comprehensible fashion.
