<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course provides fundamental knowledge of environmental and ecological economics as an application of microeconomics. In addition to the applied economics, we are going to discuss sustainability in inter- and trans-disciplinary sciences. I do not assume that students should have any ex-ante knowledge of sustainability science, but students should be interested in issues on sustainability. Some local and global environmental issues will be discussed on the basis of ecological economics and sustainability sciences in terms of planetary boundaries: climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, atmospheric aerosol loading, ocean acidification, biochemical flows, freshwater use, land-system change, and biodiversity loss. Lectures on essential notions, theories, and case studies with data are provided with class discussions. In this course, students will be able to understand fundamental notions and mechanisms of environmental problems, and think of their own opinions and ideas for improving our current world in terms of sustainability.

Importatnt Note:
The number of registered students is limited in this course. If the number of applicants exceeds the limited number, some students cannot take this course. Thus you need to carefully consider whether you should take this course or not. If you cancel the registration, it means that another student will lose the opportunity to take this course although he/she wants to do so. Senior students who are busy hunting a future job should avoid registering for this course because they often find difficulties participating in classes.
