＜概要/Course Content Summary＞

This course will focus on social issues which are facing contemporary Japan，and is a continuation of Critical Social Issues 1. The topics in this class are a little more challenging and include war responsibility and memory， nuclear energy and waste， issues involving 3/11，media, the imperial family, yakuza, and education. A further set of topics will be generated from student interests with suggestions given in class.　
　
Students will be required to do background reading for the class， and come to class prepared to discuss a particular issue (or set of issues) each week in the first part of the course. In the second part of the course, students will suggest topics on contemporary Japan for presentation. Each student must participate in these discussions and the assessment will be based on the discussions and written reflections on the issues after each class.

＜到達目標/Goals,Aims＞

This course requires students to think about current issues affecting Japanese society. An emphasis is on generating critical discussion of the issues that are pertinent to understanding the challenges that Japan faces as a nation in a global world.　
　
It is important for students to be open-minded about each of the issues， as we will consider them from multiple perspectives and try to come to understand underlying causes and obstacles to solutions as well as possible future directions in policy and government.　
　
Students will read extensively from the main textbook and other newspaper articles to develop background knowledge.　
　
Both developing one's own ideas and listening to other opinions are important and students will work on skills of discussion in this class.

Depending on the number of students in the class, some of the topics in the first part might be omitted. Students will be required to make a group presentation and an individual presentation.

＜成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria＞

平常点(出席，クラス参加，グループ作業の成果等)	30%	Students are responsible for completing the readings for the day they are assigned and to come to class prepared to discuss them. Your class participation grade will be based on the following:　　 1) Class attendance　 2) A demonstration that you have read the assigned material　 3) Contribution with thoughtful comments about the topic， the readings， and the discussion during the class.　　 The modality of class discussion and evaluation will be decided during the first weeks of the semester， according to the number of students enrolled in the course. They can include:　 - Individual/group short presentations　 - Short written comments about the issues in class
期末レポート試験・論文	30%	A final assignment will be required based on the topics discussed in class. Students will write a several page summary of the topic and their analysis based on the class discussion and further reflection (1200-1500 words)
クラスで発表など	40%	Students will be required to present once in the middle of the semester on a topic of their choice in conjunction with the professor and again at the end of the semester on a topic that they choose and research

Kingston， Jeff 『Contemporary Japan－History， Politics， and Social Change Since the 1980s－』2nd (Wiley-Blackwell、2013) ISBN:9781118315071 A useful introduction to many contemporary issues in Japanese society. This text will be the background reading for most of the issues discussed in class.

＜備考/Remarks＞

1. Since discussion is an essential part of this course please come to class prepared and on time. 　
2. Basic manners such as not texting with cell phones in class are expected.　
3. Plagiarism and Cheating
