<概要/Course Content Summary>

In this course students will be introduced to key concepts in comparative politics, especially power, democracy and the state. Pluralist and elitist theories of democracy will be examined as well as the application of these theories to concrete examples of advanced contemporary democratic states in North America, Europe and Asia. Critiques of democracy will also be studied, such as Marxist and Anarchist positions as well as those that equate democracy with ‘Western values’. The connection between democratic values and educational and social systems will also be discussed, as will the place of the democratic nation-state in the new era of globalization.

Students will be required to conduct their own research into two or more nation-states in order to apply some of the theory they have learned to concrete case studies.

Each week, students will discuss a text about the topic of the week. One student will lead the discussion with a presentation, and then further materials and ideas will be presented to the students to challenge them to think as deeply as possible about the issues raised.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

Students will acquire increased knowledge and awareness of important issues relating to democracy, democratic institutions and the varying forms that democracy takes around the world.
Students will develop their skills in research, analysis of information and ability to express their work in written and verbal forms.
