<概要/Course Content Summary>
In this class we will examine animation as a global phenomenon, focusing upon works and creators from the United States and Japan. Both early and contemporary cross-cultural influences between the popular media of the U.S. and Japan will be discussed, as well as adaptations and collaboration across national borders and industries. Together we will identify the visual and narrative characteristics of select examples of popular culture, and discuss how those characteristics relate to the works' production and use. Students will keep a research notes, submitting entries weekly. Entries most often take the form of short comparative essays, or rough outlines of the main ideas identified in the analysis of a work of animation. Students are free to discuss and analyse animations of their own choosing, as well as adaptations of animated works in other media. Most classes will begin with student-led group discussions based on the content of group members' research notes, followed by a presentation by the lecturer based on selected readings. At the end of the term students will present the results of their research, using the opportunity to further develop ideas explored in their research notes and group discussions.
<到達目標/Goals,Aims>
We will learn to recognise and analyse formal elements of animation, including animation style, narrative structure, etc. Also we will deepen our knowledge of the history of animation in the U.S. and Japan, and gain a better understanding of the ways in which social conditions and methods of production and use in each nation influenced animation, both early and contemporary, in the other.
