<概要/Course Content Summary> This course examines the political, economic, and social contexts in which Japanese culture is produced and disseminated, particularly focusing on its complex relationships with other Asian countries and with the West. We begin with an overview of the Showa period, when Japan was modernizing itself by adopting Western styles and was becoming a colonial power in Asia. Then we discuss topics such as language, religion, class, gender, race, film, and others. By looking into some major aspects of Japanese culture from various perspectives, we will analyze the characteristics of Japan's cultural and social development and the relationship between its domestic dynamics and its international relations. The course helps students understand continual changes in contemporary Japan and gain a broader transnational perspectives on culture in general. <到達目標/Goals,Aims> Students will be able to: 1) understand diverse aspects and interpretations of Japanese culture; 2) have a critical view on how Japanese culture has been created and recreated; and 3) gain insight into understanding the formation of culture in general. <授業計画/Schedule>
