<概要/Course Content Summary> This course helps students analyze key aspects of modern Japanese society by studying historical cases of encounters between Japan and the West and Japan's emergence as a modern, global nation. The course is aimed at non-native speakers of English who hope to study in the medium of English in the future (possibly as part of a university exchange program). The course begins with a study of pre-modern relations between Japan and Western nations. This is followed by a study of later encounters in the 19th and 20th centuries starting with the arrival of Commodore Perry and the ‘black ships’ in 1853. The next part of the course examines Japan's emergence as a global power and its rivalry with other nations in the first half of the 20th Century. Finally, Japan's post-war reconstruction and its alliance with the USA will be the topic of discussion. <到達目標/Goals,Aims> Students will acquire increased knowledge and awareness of important issues relating to Japan's place in the modern world. <授業計画/Schedule>
