<概要/Course Content Summary>
The Japanese archipelago stretches close to 3000 km from north to south, giving it great diversity in climate and geography. This diversity also gives rise to the richness of organisms inhabiting the archipelago. This course provides a general overview of the natural system of Japan. In the first section of the course, the students will be introduced to the physical features of Japan. In the second half, students will review how the Japanese people have interacted with their surrounding environment and examine how this interaction has created the landscape. This course is intended for anybody who has interest in the natural system of Japan. Note that this course is designed for students with limited fluency in English (see the description above). The class will include the following: --Every class-- (1) Lecture (Powerpoint slides and audio-visual material will be used). --Periodic-- (2) Group (3~6 students) and class discussions based on the lecture and reading material distributed before and/or during class.
