＜概要/Course Content Summary＞
This seminar will offer students the opportunity to study in depth the career and work of THE BEATLES.
The classes will examine how the Beatles formed as a band, how their achieved success, first in Britain and then worldwide, and how they became the most significant and important phenomenon ever in modern popular culture. We will move proceed chronologically, covering the years 1957-1970 and beyond. The classes will focus in detail on the Beatles' albums, films and individual key songs. This course will locate the achievement of the Beatles against the background of popular music (especially Rock 'n' Roll, Rhythm and Blues and Skiffle), of a rapidly changing British society in the 1960s, and of events around the world such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. Finally, we will also examine the enduring legacy and influence of the Beatles. Essentially, we will attempt to grasp how the Beatles changed the world.
The classes will be conducted entirely in English. We will listen to and analyse songs, watch films and documentaries, and discuss the Beatles' achievement in the broadest sense. There will be weekly reading, viewing and listening assignments. Students will write a mid-term report and a final report. In addition, each participant will make one short presentation in class. There is no textbook. The instructor will distribute printed materials. The classes will be informative and fun. Students must be prepared to spend time each week listening to Beatles music and watching Beatles films. Buying Beatles CDs will be encouraged.

Students who participate in this semester can expect to become acquainted with the work of the Beatles, the most successful and influential rock band in history. The classes will also enable students to learn about British society and popular culture, as well as improve their English skills through listening, reading, report writing, and discussions.
