<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course seeks to introduce core aspects and questions of peace and human security, conflict, and conflict resolution, violence and non-violence, and gender-based violence, via the lens of case studies and international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

We shall also investigate critically whether the legal framework of key conventions, treaties and declarations contributes to a more peaceful world. These legal frameworks provide tools for restricting and limiting the effects of conflicts, for protecting people who are caught in the crossfire of conflicts, and for holding governments accountable for the respect for, protection of and realization of the rights of individuals in their borders.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

Through this course, students will gain an understanding of the evolution of the field of peace studies (including key concepts such as multiple forms of peace and violence). Students will also build their knowledge of theories of conflict and approaches to its resolution, non-violence and the history of peace movements, and the relationship between gender, peace and conflict. A critical approach to the way in which legislation is framed to protect well-being and peace will also be acquired.
