<概要/Course Content Summary>

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, DEMOCRATIZATION and the RULE OF LAW will be the focus of this student-centered interdisciplinary advanced seminar. This course will explore the role of law and legal systems in the economic, social and human development of countries in transition and developing nations. We will begin with an exploration of sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Later, we will examine different approaches to the rule of law and various regional experiences with developing the rule of law, combating corruption, as well as grappling with revolution and transition to democracy.

Upon successful completion of this course, students are expected to be able to achieve the following learning outcomes: 
1) acquire a workable knowledge of the concepts and principles of law and development, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 
2) gain the necessary skills to do research on law and development 
3) obtain a better understanding of the role of international institutions in law and development 
4) understand different approaches to the rule of law 
5) be familiar with various regional rule of law experiences 
6) analyze, present and evaluate law and development policies

Course Requirements and Assignments  
Students are expected to actively participate in class discussions, thus regular attendance, and completion of background readings prior to class is important. You will be required to make two group presentations as well as lead discussions that will be assigned to you during the course. There will be short weekly discussion questions/writing assignments throughout. At the end of the course, you are required to submit them as a final portfolio.
