<概要/Course Content Summary>

Political psychology is the interdisciplinary pursuit of psychological and political issues. It brings together psychological understandings to political questions. Psychology (mostly social and cognitive) can tell us the reasons behind individuals’ political behavior and attitudes. That is, rather than examining what happened in
politics, or how it happened, we can examine why it happened by looking at the
psychology of individuals. For example: What motivate individuals to take part in
political activity? Or, what cause people to make political decisions and form political attitudes? Answering such questions allow us to explain phenomena as political leadership, media’s role and effect, and political aggression and violence, racism and discrimination. In this course we will delve into the psychology behind political behavior and opinion. We begin with a brief introduction on the field of political psychology and will later detail major topic areas, including personality types and political involvement, political socialization process, political judgment and information, communication processes and political effect, elite motivation and decision-making, and culture, political culture and intercultural communication.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to historical and contemporary perspectives in political psychology. As a subdiscipline linking political science and psychology, a thorough understanding of political psychology necessitates theoretical and methodological diversity. Simultaneously, this course will also detail issues
related to political attitudes and public opinion, including what opinions are and how they are formed. The course will begin with an overview of the field of political psychology and the ways that questions within political psychology have been studied. Because much of the early work on political psychology focused on personality, we will start by considering how enduring traits shape behavior. We will then consider the role and effect of social context and how context help to explain individuals’ participation in some of the most horrific acts committed in the 20th and 21st centuries. The course will also detail the structure of political attitudes, examining when, and under what conditions, individuals adjust their political beliefs and social identities; the role of identities in the domain of group conflict; racial attitudes and terrorism; national identification and patriotism; and media and personal communication processes and their outcome. Students will leave the course with a thorough understanding of political behavior and opinions, their origins, and their effects on everyday life in the modern state.
