<概要/Course Content Summary>
Cities compete against each other in many spheres of economic activities: enhancing accessibility, convenience and a variety of urban amenity to entice people to move in. They also try to invite various facilities to promote employment and further urban agglomerations. This course takes city of Kyoto as an example and considers in depth how Kyoto succeeds/fails in promoting industries, jobs, and homes for their citizens . The course will be comprised of three elements. First, we introduce you to a few key tools of economic analysis needed for the study: comparative advantage, location choice, and urban agglomeration, among others. Second element is an overview of industries in Kyoto. We offer a bird’s eye view of Kyoto industries across sectors and time. The last element is a few case studies employing the first two elements. This course is suitable for students who have taken introductory economics and micro-economics. The course also refers frequently to materials covered in Society and Economy of Kyoto. Those who have not taken the course should consult for presentation slides and reading materials posted in that course.
<到達目標/Goals,Aims>
The objective of the course is to offer a comprehensive economic landscape of Kyoto as a market for talents and a place for learning, networking, innovation, and consumption. At the same time, the course is intended as gentle introduction to the economist’s way of exploring ideas, measurements, analysis, and (a bit of) statistical reasoning. Students are encouraged to conduct their own research and present their findings in the class. Joint researches are also encouraged. For those who prefer to take standard exam/reports, there will be a mid-term essay and final essay questions.
