<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course will systematically study and debate some of the key contents of the important and timely textbook: "Social Movements in Global Politics" by David West. The course will encourage students to study and think critically about a variety of recent social movements ranging from those of women, gays and lesbians, and anti-racists, to environmentalists, the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring - and will also examine the motivations and actions of religious fundamentalists, racial supremacists and ultra-nationalists around the world. Through interactive lectures/seminars/debates/research/reading and writing projects (including research journals, notebooks and short essays) and discussion, students will deepen their knowledge and critical understanding of Social Movements and Contentious Politics.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

Students will deepen and develop their critical reading, writing, thinking, discussion, presentation, and research skills through the aforementioned pedagogical methods. By the end of the semester, their knowledge and understanding of the above will have been increased and enhanced, as will their ability to comprehend and make informed judgements about some of the key concepts and problems of Social Movements and Contentious Politics in various parts of the World.

<成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>

平常点(出席,クラス参加,グループ作業の成果等)  30%   
小レポート  20%   
中間レポート試験  25%   
期末レポート試験・論文  25%   

Continuous Assessment: Class Participation (30%). In addition to the requirements of the "short report" (20%), "mid-term report" (25%) and the "end of term report (25%): all other writing requirements in notebooks and "On-Going" Research Journals will be assessed within this continuous assessment criteria.

David West , Social Movements in Global Politics ,  First .   (Polity, 2013) .  ISBN:978-0-7456-4960-3  Students are expected and encouraged to buy their own copy of the textbook and to read through it carefully, making notes, as instructed, as this will facilitate, enhance and deepen the experience of learning. Chapter photocopies will also be made available if necessary, and students can also make their own photocopies from the ILA Library copy, as necessary.
