Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods

<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course introduces students to the field of qualitative research and prepares them in the skills, techniques, and knowledge to design and undertake research using qualitative methods. It provides an overview of qualitative research design and covers various research methods and approaches including participant observation, in-depth interviews, and visual ethnographic data. Students will learn about data collection, description, analysis, and interpretation. They will also be asked to think critically about the ethical issues present in qualitative research. 
 
*This course will be offered through live streaming (using Zoom) during the scheduled time period. Classes will be recorded and made available for a limited time to students who are unable to attend classes. However, as in-class discussions and exercises are an important component, this course is recommended for students who are available during the scheduled time period.

1) Appraise the strengths and limitations of qualitative research 
2) Examine the ethical responsibilities of conducting qualitative research 
3) Select the most appropriate methods to answer particular research questions 
4) Collect and analyze data using qualitative research methods

6) Design a qualitative research project

<成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>

Attendance, Class participation, Group work   20%  Students are expected to complete the reading assignments before class and to actively participate in discussions and group work. You must inform the instructor directly (by email) prior to class time in case of an absence for a legitimate reason. Students may be able to complete alternative coursework in lieu of attendance and participation after consulting with the instructor.  
Personal statement   5%  A statement about why you are interested in qualitative research methods and your goals for this course.  
Field notes  10%  Field notes on "socially distanced fieldwork"  
Graded assignments  10%  Two graded assignments based on readings and classwork  
Interview Transcript and Reflection  10%  Transcript of one semi-structured interview plus one-page reflection on the interview experience  
Presentations   20%  Design and present on a qualitative research project (details to be announced) 
Research Report  25%  Report on the research project (details to be announced)
