<概要/Course Content Summary>

What do the parties stand for? How do people get – and stay – elected? How do parties try to influence voters? How are campaigns run? How do voters decide?
We look at how campaigns are run and the content of campaigns – the positions candidates and parties take, the effects of political contexts and campaign events, how campaign messages are conveyed to citizens, and how this all influences who wins.
Students should read daily newspapers and watch news programs on television, to get a variety of perspectives on events. We will be discussing political events as they happen, and as they are reported.
One student each week is expected to take the lead in selecting an election related news story, summarizing the story and discussing its relevance to the readings (sign up in class). Please email the article to the class members before class. All students are expected to read the article and discuss the news roundups.
The news analysis requires students to critique the reportage and apply theories and findings from the readings. The goal in this class is to go beyond basic analysis.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

To explore what drives elections in Japan and in other democracies. The assignments will require students to apply the theories from the readings to recent elections.
