  ESTA TINA OTTMAN

<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course aims firstly to provide participants with an introduction to the political history of the modern Middle East and the complex social, political and economic challenges that are facing the region today. In particular our inquiry will focus on the multiple challenges to human security posed by the processes of change that have been sweeping across the MENA region, known variously as the Arab Spring, Awakenings, Revolts or Uprisings. We will explore the diverse histories and circumstances of each of the states in which the pro-democracy/civil resistance protests originally broke out or broke down, and seek also to identify commonalities. Using a media analysis approach, we will also then interpret issues as the occur in real time in key states of the Middle East. Therefore the course will be conducted with a mixed lecture/seminar-style approach, to allow for students’ participation in weekly media analysis.
The course will also scrutinize the Palestine Question, which is often said to be at the heart of relational tensions throughout the region and on the wider global stage.
Finally, we will turn our attention toward the Japanese perspective. The Japanese governmental position toward and engagement with the nation-states of Western Asia will be clarified, in order to open the dialogue towards a common future. The contribution of Japanese NGOs to the region will also be highlighted.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

At the conclusion of this course, students will have arrived at:
- an understanding of the historical, social and political processes that have shaped the contemporary Middle East
- a more in-depth knowledge of current critical developments in the countries of the Arab pro-democracy uprisings, particularly as they affect human security
- an increased awareness of current issues and crises in the MENA region, and an enhanced critical capacity to analyze media discourse about the region
