<概要/Course Content Summary>
In this course, we consider the recent experiences of East Asian economies with regard to economic growth and development. The semester is split into two parts. The first eleven weeks consist of a basic introduction to economic growth theory, including topics such as physical capital accumulation, population growth, and technological progress. We then consider what these theories imply about the relationships between international trade, government, income inequality, natural resources, and economic growth. In the remainder of the course, students prepare a research paper on the experiences of a specific country, and then present their findings to the class.
<到達目標/Goals,Aims>
The main objective of this course is to develop an understanding of how economic theory can be used to explain the growth patterns that we observe for various countries in East Asia. By the end of the course, students will have a working knowledge of the standard growth theories.

Course Requirements and Assignments At the beginning of the course, each student selects an East Asian country to study over the duration of the semester. This country will be the topic of the student’s term paper and final presentation. Students are required to submit two drafts of their term papers before they make their final presentation. The final version of the term paper is submitted on the final day of classes (2000 words minimum). During the first eleven weeks of the course, the class studies a number of topics on economic growth in a lecture/discussion format. Students should attend all classes. Each week, students are required to research and answer a question about their chosen countries. This first part of the course ends with a midterm assignment that students have a week to complete and submit. The remainder of the course consists of student presentations on their chosen countries. Participation grades weigh heavily on students attentiveness and participation in discussion after each student’s presentation.
