＜概要/Course Content Summary＞
This course provides students with an introduction to current issues associated with the Japanese labor market through a discussion of theories of labor economics and current industry-labor related issues that provide concrete examples of these theories. We will focus on the most important current Japanese economic and business-related issues as these affect industry & labor in Japan now.

The objectives of this course are to allow students to get a good basic understanding of how Japanese labor and business functions both domestically and in context of world economic exchange. Accordingly, each topic discussed will be examined in terms of how
it applies specifically to the Japanese social-economic environment, and how this plays out in the international-global economic context.

Course Requirements and Assignments
a) Attendance, Readings, Participation:
You are required to submit at least 80% of summaries of weekly readings. You are responsible for completing all text readings and supplementary readings for the day they are assigned
b) Presentations:
You have the option to give one mid-tern & one final presentation on an issue discussed in class. You will send the manuscript of this presentation and all references used to me via Duet
c) Mid-Term/Final Report:
You have the option of doing a research report in lieu of the presentation and submitting this via Duet. These reports should be 3-5 pages in length & must include at least 5 reference sources. Details of requirements for this will be discussed in class.
d) Plagiarism and cheating: Doshisha University does not tolerate plagiarism, cheating, or helping others to cheat. Such actions will result in an automatic “F” (Failure) in the course. Plagiarism is defined as misrepresenting the work of others (whether published or not) as your own. It may be inadvertent or intentional. All facts, statistics, quotations, or paraphrasing of any information that is not common knowledge should be cited.
