<概要/Course Content Summary>

The number of Japanese companies over 100 years old is overwhelmingly large compared to other countries. Many of these long-established companies have maintained the philosophy of cherishing diverse stakeholders such as customers, business partners, employees, and local communities. Sampo-Yoshi (also known as three-way satisfaction) is a traditional Japanese concept that is at the heart of Japanese business. It has remained unchanged in its long history and has been illustrated in the behavior of companies, promoting harmonious consideration for various stakeholders to build a lasting relationship based on trust. It is also adopted by young managers in present day.
In this course, we will investigate the historical and theoretical framework of the Three-Way Satisfaction management philosophy and practices, and examine recent cases and how traditional management philosophy, innovation, creativity, and values still live on in modern Japanese business.

Furthermore, in the class, we will take up the key issues and trends currently facing Japanese business and employment. Specifically, the following important topics will be covered; human resources development mechanism in Japan, promoting regional creation and social innovation, Japanese way of promoting Corporate Social Responsibility and SDGs, current issues of the working environment in Japan such as working style reform and managing diversity, and global competencies and skills necessary to work worldwide. In the class, furthermore, I would like to touch upon the recent trend of the recruitment process and training system of new graduates unique to Japanese companies.

The course provides students with a unique opportunity to find one’s values in working by deepening the understanding of management philosophy and values that are inherited in Japanese business. The course will help students to acquire a range of positive attitudes, qualities and self-motivation essential to working not only in Japan, but also anywhere in the world. Students are provided with hands-on experiences by using practical examples and materials and explain in an easy-to-understand manner using comparisons with other countries.
