<概要/Course Content Summary>

Important Notice: Due to the ongoing pandemic, this course will be conducted in on-demand format. All lectures will be uploaded online (the URL for each lecture will be provided to registered students at the start of the academic term).

Course Description: Michel Foucault reversed the maxim that war is politics by other means by instead suggesting that politics is war by other means. What does Foucault mean? Is Foucault correct? These questions raise perennial themes in the history of social, political, and economic thought, such as: the struggle for freedom, the quest for power, the rights of citizens, and the role of the state. Readings and lectures will thus introduce students to prominent figures in the history of social, political, and economic thought by examining how thinkers like Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Hume, Rousseau, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Durkheim, and Foucault have conceptualized some these core themes. Becoming familiar with the history of the concepts covered in class will not only equip students with vital intellectual tools for thinking about these concepts in their historical contexts, but will also equip them with valuable tools for critically assessing contemporary social, political, and economic issues as well.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

This course will help students understand the historical development of key concepts in social, political, and economic thought. Lectures and reading assignments will help students see how the interplay between social, political, and economic forces have shaped and continue to shape the way people understand basic concepts like freedom and individual rights as they pertain to politics, economics, and society.
