<概要/Course Content Summary>
In this course, students apply the knowledge that they have gained through coursework undertaken in the first three years of their degrees as they design, propose, implement, and report on the results of a substantial independent research project. The main focus of this seminar style course is to guide students through group discussions, presentations, and writing assignments.
<到達目標/Goals,Aims>
This course has two parts, Part I and Part II, which are completed over two semesters through registration in Advanced Seminar 1 and Advanced Seminar 2, in either order. Students in Part I (the first semester) create a Research Project Proposal (minimum 3000 words excluding appendices, figures, tables, and references) for their independent research projects. In Part II (the second semester), students enrolled in the 2015 Curriculum work toward the completion of either a Research Report (minimum 5000 words excluding appendices, figures, tables, and references), or an Honors Thesis (minimum 9000 words excluding appendices, figures, tables, and references). Registration for the Honors Thesis requires both the permission of the course instructor and the submission of an Honors Thesis Application Form with a Research Project Proposal at the end of the first Advanced Seminar. Note that although the Honors Thesis is an elective course, students are not permitted to withdraw from the course once they have registered for it. Students enrolled in the 2011-2014 Curriculum work toward the completion of a Graduate Thesis (minimum 6000 words excluding appendices, figures, tables, and references) in Part II. These students are required to register for the Graduate Thesis.

Students are required to attend all classes and participate in discussions regarding the research being undertaken by fellow classmates. Throughout the semester, students complete a number of writing assignments and in-class presentations as intermediate steps in the completion of either a Research Project Proposal (for Part I students), a Research Report (for Part II 2015 Curriculum students), an Honors Thesis (for Part II 2015 Curriculum Honors Thesis students), or a Graduate Thesis for Part II 2011-2014 Curriculum students). Classroom Policies Every week there will be interactive synchronous (live) seminars. These will be held via the Microsoft Teams online conference system (available to download for free, with a Doshisha account). The success of online classes depends on everyone committing to the same levels of involvement that we share in the physical classroom. We will use the same guidelines and norms, so you will be expected to come to class after completing the readings and watching any class video materials, and in class, taking notes, asking and answering questions, and interacting with classmates. The first class will include a meet-and-greet session, so please check your technical set up so that Teams, your microphone, and camera are working. Please check the Teams class noticeboard regularly. I will post messages there and ask you to ask and respond to questions on the chat board. For everyone’s benefit, please try to participate in a quiet place, turn on your video feed, and mute your microphone unless you are speaking. The live sessions may be recorded and uploaded, for students who are unable to participate in the time zone synchronously.
<成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>
Part I: Research Project Proposal 100% Part II: Research Report, Honors Thesis, or Graduate Thesis 100% Classroom Policies Refer to the ILA Classroom Policy outlined in the ILA Student Handbook. Course Materials To be provided in class and through individual consultation when necessary. If you are hoping to write a thesis, you need to download the form and ask the instructor to sign it. The in-class deadline is at least 3 weeks before the ILA deadline. Confirm with the instructor. You need to have your thesis copy-edited so that the grammar is perfect.
