<概要/Course Content Summary>

In this course, students apply the knowledge that they have gained through coursework undertaken in the first three years of their degrees as they design, propose, implement, and report on the results of a substantial independent research project. The main focus of this seminar style course is to guide students in the application of data analysis to the study of issues relating to business and economics through group discussions, presentations, and writing assignments.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

This course has two parts, Part I and Part II, which are completed over two semesters through registration in Advanced Seminar 1 and Advanced Seminar 2, in either order.

Students in Part I (the first semester) create a Research Project Proposal (minimum 3000 words excluding appendices, figures, tables, and references) for their independent research projects.

In Part II (the second semester), students enrolled in the 2015 Curriculum work toward the completion of either a Research Report (minimum 5000 words excluding appendices, figures, tables, and references), or an Honors Thesis (minimum 9000 words excluding appendices, figures, tables, and references). Registration for the Honors Thesis requires both the permission of the course instructor and the submission of an Honors Thesis Application Form with a Research Project Proposal at the end of the first Advanced Seminar. Note that although the Honors Thesis is an elective course, students are not permitted to withdraw from the course once they have registered for it.

Students enrolled in the 2011-2014 Curriculum work toward the completion of a Graduate Thesis (minimum 6000 words excluding appendices, figures, tables, and references) in Part II. These students are required to register for the Graduate Thesis.

As the main research methodologies adopted in this course are quantitative in nature, students are encouraged to complete Introduction to Quantitative Research Methods and Intermediate Seminar D before enrolling. In addition, students should attempt to create a short list of topics they might be interested in investigating, before the course begins.
