<概要/Course Content Summary>

Japanese Historical Studies: Foreign Visions of Modern Japan.

Through their publications, foreign visitors to Japan such as Kaempfer, Von Siebold, Satow, Montgomery, Chamberlain and Mason have offered readers of the English language glimpses of Japan between the end of the seventeenth century and the early twentieth century. Although their testimonies, descriptions and assertions are invaluable to historians, it is necessary to approach them from a critical point of view and put them into historical contexts. This class will analyze texts from the above authors through research, reading, writing and discussion.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

This seminar has three main objectives. First, to learn how to construct historical knowledge by critically examining primary sources such as diaries, reports, memoirs, and travel guides. Secondly, to familiarize students with the people, culture, society, customs, politics, diplomacy, education, and localities of modern Japan portrayed by foreign visitors in their writings. Thirdly, to learn how to contextualize sources by placing them into historical perspective.
