<概要/Course Content Summary>

Disclaimer About Online Classes: Due to the Covid-19 situation, as you know the class will be online. This will necessitate that we modify the speed and structure of lessons. It is hard to imagine precisely how that will go now, so instead of making changes to this syllabus, the instructor promises the following:
1) All changes will be discussed with students in class
2) All changes will be for students' benefit, ie so that they a) learn and b) get as high a mark as possible so long as they do the work.
I look forward to diving into media with you this semester.

Content: In this course students will examine Japan's dynamic and diverse media environment, which is both a reflection of and an influence on the country's unique culture. We will look at the more complex issues in the field with a discursive and industry focus. Class topics will emphasize the role of the media in the construction of reality, and dissemination of political and cultural discourses. In addition, we will be considering various aspects of production and reception issues by looking at real world cases.
Keywords: media, Japanese society, discourse analysis

Method: The instructor uses Student-centered learning via student-lead discussions and projects, and acts as a guide to methodology while students bring their own lived experience to their research.
Students interested in this course should already be interested in fundamental topics within Japanese society and its media.

Students will be able to plan and perform an analysis of media suitable for publication or presentation. Students will be able to employ a basic Media Studies framework to analyze media power determinants, production techniques, ideological or discursive aspects, and reception.

The learning outcomes for this course are to be able to:
• Critically analyze contemporary Japanese media.

The instructor believes in Stiggins' Assessment FOR student learning, and so will communicate clearly all evaluation in advance of assignments. Students should read these carefully to know how to succeed in the assignment, and also how to improve their critical skills. Students should also adjust their lifestyle so that assignments are done at a steady pace and turned in on time. Pulling all-nighters or doing last minute jobs will reduce the quality and thus affect the final mark.
