<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course sets out to familiarize the student with the way in which a variety of human groups go about solving the problems that their social lives and environments create for them. The student will read two ethnographies of life for a group of people in a given region of the world over the duration of the course.
As the students become familiar with their own and their peers’ ethnographies, linkages between and across these different regions and cultures will become apparent. The class attempts to allow the student to understand the value and importance of ethnographic work and the ethnographic perspective.
Through written work, the student will build up knowledge of several different cultural ways of life and begin to be able to interpret and understand how humans share and solve key problems in their lives.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

The course aims to allow the student to take a variety of cultural information and to find linkages and connections between this data. Through so doing, the course hopes to encourage the student to exercise their interpretative and analytical skills, to organize and categorize complex and related information into written and oral forms.

<成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>

Written Assignments  70%  There are two types of written assignments to prepare during this course. The first is a worksheet that will be prepared in response to the viewing of films. You will need to prepare one worksheet per film. These worksheets will be distributed to you on the days when we have films.
Literature (ethnography section) reviews. During the course you will read two ethnographies all the way through. Each ethnography will be divided into 5 sections and you will need to prepare a one page review of each section most weeks. Your review should summarize, in your own words, the content of the section. It may also include your thoughts about linkages between films and other ethnographies.
At the end of class in week 13 you will submit 4 word processed worksheets and 10 literature reviews. Together this written work will count for up to 40% of your total grade.

Group and Individual Presentations  30%  During the course you will present twice. First, you will present as a group in week 9, and then you will conduct an individual presentation in week 14/15. Group presentations will be up to 20mins in length. Individual presentations will be between 10-15 mins in length.
Your group will receive a grade based on the effort of all individuals. You will grade each other’s presentations based on criteria introduced in the class.
Individual presentations will be graded by your instructor. Your total grade for presentations will be a combination of your group and individual presentations.
