<概要/Course Content Summary>
KEYWORDS: Speaking, communication, listening, discussion, group activities This course continues Communication in English 1 and has the same aims: to increase students' ability to communicate effectively in and to better comprehend spoken English. However, all 4 basic language skills will be part of the course work. Audio recordings, videos, and short reading passages will provide a basis for conversations, discussions, short group or individual presentations, and role-plays. Listening and discussion topics include a variety of contemporary issues such as lifestyle choices, the environment and culture. A variety of pair and group speaking activities and some short writing tasks will allow students to practice using English in different situations and for different purposes, building confidence.
<到達目標/Goals,Aims>
Overall, the goal is to give students greater confidence in using English as an international language to talk about themselves, their lives, their own and other cultures, and to discuss current issues. More specifically, students will learn: --skills to better understand spoken English presented in a variety of forms (interviews, radio programs, conversations, videos, etc); --expressions and grammatical patterns that will help them communicate their ideas and opinions clearly in English in various situations; --critical thinking skills needed to comprehend others' meaning and to present their own ideas more clearly and logically; --practical English for talking about themselves or for communicating in practical situations such as travel; --basic English email writing and short essay writing.

REVIEW ALL UNITS FOR SPEAKING EVALUATION (2 hrs)
|
1) Graded performance activities and tests/quizzes are shown in bold. Details of how tests and presentations will be carried out will be explained in class. 2) The schedule will likely be adjusted during the semester based on class needs and progress. Assignments for the following class will be confirmed before the end of each class and posted on e-class. 3) Most grammar and vocabulary review and video-viewing assignments will require students to use the online practice system you used first semester. Any students new to the class should wait for the professor's instructions before signing up for the system; you must have your textbook first. Continuing students need to remember there sign-in information.

|
Details of how class participation will be assessed will be included in the document "Syllabus Supplement" which we will review on the first day of class. It will be posted on e-class at least a week before classes begin, so please read it carefully. Because I cannot grade every group or pair on presentations done to groups rather than the entire class, I will ask students to record their parts of the performance and post the recordings along with your notes or script. Details will be provided in class. I will aim to give feedback on most major graded activities (tests, essays, presentations) with 2 weeks after the performance/submission date, but in unusually busy periods during the semester it may take longer. General feedback on the speaking evaluation will be included in the course review.

<備考/Remarks>
Important new information as of 9/8/2020: In fall term this course will continue online via Zoom as it was conducted during the spring term. An explanation will be posted on Duet as requested by the university and all enrolled students should receive a message about this via e-class as well soon after 9/8. The planned content of the course has not changed from the originally published syllabus but some adjustments have been made here to assignments and weights of grading criteria in part because of this. This class will be conducted entirely in English. Students should attend every class and speak in English at all times during class.
