<概要/Course Content Summary> Since around the 5th century, the language now called English has been formed and transformed through many historical events on the British Isles, as many European tribes settled in England. English spread to other areas of the globe along with diasporas from the British Empire. Now we talk about Englishes rather than one single English for the diversities in pronunciation and grammar. This course focuses on 1) historical and social background to the changes mentioned above, and 2) the actual process of the linguistic changes through the history. This course encourages students to become good investigators of such phonological and syntactic changes. Make sure you read the relevant part(s) of the textbook for each lecture. <到達目標/Goals,Aims> Students will acquire basic knowledge of structural changes of English. <授業計画/Schedule>
