<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course reflects on the complex phenomenon of cultural interaction, through the examination of historical episodes. It offers the theoretical basis to think critically about the interaction between Japanese culture and foreign cultures. Taking as starting point the first time Europe and Japan interacted in the 16th century, we will closely analyze specific historical episodes in which Japanese people interacted with foreigners in order to reflect on present-day problems and the students' personal ideas and experiences of cultural interaction both abroad and in Japan. Interaction among peers will be encouraged.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

This course aims at helping students understand cultural interaction from a critical and bias-conscious perspective, avoiding stereotypes and generalizations and reflecting on their own experiences in Japan and abroad. Since the lectures will be entirely conducted in English, this course also aims at helping students improve their English language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) and to express their thoughts clearly and respectfully.
