<概要/Course Content Summary>

Based upon what you learned in Intermediate Seminar 1, this course will continue to consider the issue of cultural contact and representation. We will consider complex politics of representation with a special focus on nineteenth-century Britain and America. It was the era in which people experienced what is nowadays called “globalization” as a result of the development of transportation and communication technology. We will look at how people of that period perceived the “world” and constructed the image of the world by examining various cultural institutions and events such as museums and exhibitions as well as children's literature. This course will also address the fundamental problem of cultural contact and representation in general and look at various ways in which culture can be represented or exhibited in today's media such as TV programs, documentaries, and films. The students are encouraged to examine critically how different cultures are represented in various media and consider what kinds of mechanism are working behind those representations. Class will be conducted mainly in English, and students are encouraged to participate actively in discussion.

Goals,Aims>

Students will expand and deepen their insight into the dynamics of cultural representation and gain analytical and critical thinking skills.
