<概要/Course Content Summary>

IN this twice-a-week intensive classes, students will work on improving their ability to communicate in the context of small group discussions. The classes are conducted entirely in English to give students the opportunity to actively participate in the group activities in an English only academic environment. 
The focus of this class is academic discussions and presentations. Initially, students will have to listen to introductory lectures taken from various academic disciplines (DVD material) and practice taking notes. Students will then be asked to discuss or present on the ideas contained in the lecture. Students will be expected to supplement the information from the lectures with their own ideas, experiences, or research. In doing so students will be able to experience the type of student centered learning environment that they can expect to encounter during their time overseas. Throughout the course students will also be required to give short presentations that focus on their own research and independently collected data. By independently researching and presenting on themes related to the academic lectures, students will be able to develop their abilities to research and analyse information related to a topic and improve their critical thinking skills. Students will also receive guidance on how to avoid plagiarism when they are independently researching and presenting on a topic. 

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

Students will learn to use appropriate communicative strategies in real life academic situations. Students will be expected to express their opinions and ideas on a range of academic topics, introduced through mini-lectures, in a logically manner through active participation in small group and class discussions and through short oral presentations. Students will also be given the opportunity to practice how to take notes during a lecture or short academic presentation. This will help them to practice listening actively and deferring their comments until they’ve heard the entire story.

There may be some minimum changes in terms of the topics and units to be covered. Students will give presentations in class according to a more detailed schedule issued by each instructor. 

<成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>

Attendence and participation   20%  Active participation will be highly evaluated. 
In-class presentation (8 times)  40%  Active participation will be highly evaluated. 
Semester-project presentation  20%  Final performance based on preparation will be evaluated.  
Others (quizzes and assignments etc.)  20%  To be instructed in class. 

This class values students' active participation and regular attendance. 
This class calls serious attention to the issue of plagiarism for the preparation of presentations.
