<概要/Course Content Summary>

The objective of this course is to guide students through a reflection about the complexities of the notion of culture, and to offer the theoretical basis to think about Japanese culture in a critical way. We will closely evaluate the relation between culture and society in order to understand how notions of traditional Japanese culture play a capital role in the formation of contemporary Japanese society.
The course will cover a wide range of topics related to social, political and economical aspects of Japanese culture, as well as to artistic productions, customs and social practices.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

This course aims at helping students understand Japanese culture from a global, critical, and multidisciplinary perspective, while avoiding stereotypes and generalizations, as well as to identify relevant issues in contemporary Japanese society.
Since it will be entirely conducted in English, this course aims at helping students prepare to attend a lecture in an English-speaking environment, and to express their thoughts clearly and concisely in English.
