Introduction to English-Speaking Cultures

＜概要/Course Content Summary＞

The speakers of English increased from about 5-7 million in 1600 to 2 billion at the start of the 21st century as 'new Englishes' and New Englishes have developed in the wake of British colonialism. Englishes developed all over the globe in tandem with the spread of some English culture to the territories. Global issues including enviromental problems are threatening our present society and are calling for global cooperations. A good command of English as a lingua franca is becoming increasingly important, which makes effective communication possible between people with diverse linguistic backgrounds.　
This course will introduce major historical stages of the dispersion of people and their language from British Isles, focusing on the regional uniqueness of the English language and the cultures of the anglophonic areas along with the detailed study of varieties of English. The emphasis will be on the first diaspora from some parts of the British Isles, settled in North America， Australia， New Zealand and South Africa, resulted in new mother-tongue varieties.

The lectures will background you with the regional uniqueness of the English language and the cultures. You will acquire analytical skills through language data provided in the lectures， and develop logical thinking.

平常点(出席，クラス参加，グループ作業の成果等)	20%	三分の一以上欠席したものは期末試験の受験資格を失う　遅刻は三回で欠席一回分の扱い
期末レポート試験・論文	50%
提出物	30%	講義に関する内容のまとめや課題などを提出。もしくは内容理解確認クイズを実施，提出する。
