<概要/Course Content Summary>
This course picks up where American Literature and Society 1 left off, namely in the mid-twentieth century at the time of the Red Scare, McCarthyism, and the rise of the United States as a hegemonic capitalist superpower facing off against the Soviet Union as a hegemonic communist superpower. The format of the course will follow the model previously established – that is, a division between lectures and in-class student discussions. One important difference, however, is that we shall not ‘build up’ to lengthier reading assignments but instead devote our energies primarily to reading novels. Please note that this work begins at the first week, not the second as in the preceding course. By the end of the course, students will have acquired a basic understanding of the periodization of American literature; a ready knowledge of the biographies of the writers included in the syllabus; an improved capacity to close read the texts in question; a readiness to explore the social issues that feature in American literature; and the confidence to deepen their readings still further through independent research.
<到達目標/Goals,Aims>
• To provide a clear outline of United States literary history from the mid-twentieth century to the present era. • To communicate the concepts of Postmodernism and literary Feminism. • To acquaint students with different forms of writing, with an emphasis upon the novel, but also including the play, life writing, and the short story. • To impart understanding of significant historical phenomena that had a bearing on literary writing, such as the Second World War, the Cold War, the Native American Renaissance, and the rise of Islamic Fundamentalism.
