<概要/Course Content Summary>

War is arguably the oldest theme in the history of Western literature. Yet how exactly is war experienced and understood, at an individual level? American literature furnishes rich and abundant source material for exploring these matters. Beginning with the American Civil War and ending with the Iraq War, this course spans a century-and-a-half of literary endeavours. No particular political position is assumed of any student who enrols, nor is the intention to politicize students by the end of it. Rather, the intention is to explore and explode misconceptions, appreciate the life stories of canonical writers, and delve into the challenges that creative writers undergo when they engage this topic.

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

- Provide a literary history of most major wars in which the United States has participated.
- Instil a firm understanding of the principles of literary impressionism; modernism; postmodernism; and trauma theory.
- Engage a range of literary forms, including the novel, the short story, journalism, and new journalism.
