<概要/Course Content Summary>

This course is an introduction to the origin, development, and maturation of the African diaspora in the Americas, the Caribbean, and Western Europe. Beginning with the transatlantic slave trade and up to the present, we will examine key themes that have shaped the social, cultural and political life of African people over the course of four tumultuous centuries. Methodologically, a premium will be placed on geographical breadth and the theoretical import of a diasporic framework for understanding black presence in the modern world. Moreover, this course will necessarily be interdisciplinary, making use of recent scholarship in history, anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, literary studies and music. Intellectually, every attempt will be made to illuminate and complicate the variegated presence of black people in the Americas, whereas to underscore the rich historical tributaries that link Harlem to Havana and Salvador to Louisiana.
