＜概要/Course Content Summary＞
This course makes the case that religion plays a fundamental role in American life, both past and present. Understanding America requires understanding religion. As a result, we examine the major landmarks of religious life in America as they intersect with politics, race, gender, war and sexuality.
Though there have been diverse faiths (and people of no faith) since the beginning of the American experiment, Christians, both Protestant and Catholic, have played the dominant role in shaping ideas about religion and the public sphere. So this class focuses especially on the Christian experience in America, in all its own diversity. We learn that this wide diverse Christian population has disagreed strongly about the meaning of their faith and how to live in communion with others. How those struggles developed and have played out forms the major focus of this course.
