<概要/Course Content Summary>

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the structure of a scholarly paper and to help them develop organizational, outlining, and writing skills for writing scientific papers by developing a literature review relevant to each student's field of study. This course will cover many issues specific to scientific writing such as: common errors in scientific writing, abbreviations, editorial style, reference lists, citing of sources, and the punctuation associated with these tasks.

After successfully completing this course students will: 
know the typical structure of a research paper; 
know how to design a manuscript via outlining; 
know about many aspects of editorial style (e.g., citations styles); 
have written a literature review on an engineering or scientific topic.

The above is the tentative schedule. If there is insufficient time to cover the primary topics, student oral presentations may be canceled.

<成績評価基準/Evaluation Criteria>

Attendance & Participation  10%  Attendance at all class meetings is required. 
Early Drafts, Outlines, In-Class tasks, et cetera  10%  Homework will be assigned regularly (building to the final assignment). 
Oral Presentation of Literature Review  10%  (doing a computer-based presentation is recommended) 
Quizzes  20%  There will be one to four quizzes and small examinations. 
Final Written Assignment  50%  Final assignment can be revised/rewritten if needed to achieve a higher or passing grade. 

The above is the tentative grading scheme (it is unlikely any component will change by more than 5%). At least one rewrite of the final assignment will be possible, subject to various school deadlines.

There will be no formal textbook for this class, however, students will be expected to learn the material in the handouts and lectures.

<備考/Remarks>

Before taking this class students should be capable of writing, in English, essays on non-scientific topics.
