<概要/Course Content Summary>

[ Course Summary ]
This course provides the opportunity to perform master's research under the supervision of a designated professor. You will be part of the professor's laboratory group, decide upon a research theme, complete your master's research, and submit a master's thesis. You will also have to give a presentation to defend your master's thesis.

[ Research Overview ]
Aiming to improve the collaboration and productivity of human beings, we conduct research from the following two standpoints: basic research on pattern recognition, media processing, machine learning, and knowledge discovery; and applied research on collaboration support and medical and welfare informatics based on the findings of the basic research.

In the basic research, we study the theoretical foundations of pattern recognizer training methods, speech/image recognition algorithms, and machine learning/knowledge discovery algorithms, aiming to contribute to a wide range of science and engineering disciplines.

In the applied research, we are developing an experimental remote collaboration support system, termed "t-Room," to create a media realm beyond time and space. Specifically, we are engaged in research on advanced multimedia information processing and communication, including the development of technologies to edit high-quality images, the application of communication networking technologies, and the development of intelligent human interfaces.

[ Research Environment ]
Our laboratory includes two experimental apparatuses for the remote collaboration support system, "t-Room", to enable testing regarding "the sense of being in the same room." The equipment enables the development of t-Room controlling software as well as the application of basic research findings on pattern recognition, media processing, machine learning, and knowledge discovery.

By conducting your research with a transdisciplinary approach in this research environment, you will be able contribute to and make a difference in academia. This transdisciplinary approach requires knowledge and skills in the following areas: the technologies of media processing, pattern recognition, machine learning, and knowledge discovery, based on theory and mathematics; and the utilization of these technologies in human collaborative environments. The supervising professor will guide you in acquiring these skills and knowledge and in accomplishing your research.

[ Research Themes ]
Remote Collaboration Support System, "t-Room"
- t-Room media processing
- t-Room evaluation (psychological measurement of functions and their usability)
- t-Room system development (addition and improvement of remote collaboration functions)
- t-Room communication networking (addition and improvement of networking functions)

Pattern Recognition
- Theory underlying pattern recognizer designs
- Analysis and discovery of universal characteristics in speech recognition

Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery
- Algorithms for machine learning and knowledge discovery
- Systems to support knowledge discovery
- Knowledge discovery in medical databases

<到達目標/Goals,Aims>

You are expected to acquire expertise in information science and technology and to develop the skills necessary to identify and solve real problems through your master's research. Furthermore, in writing a master's thesis, you are expected to sufficiently develop writing skills in order to clearly and logically describe the expert knowledge and research findings.
